About the event
Sounds of Change: The Lesbian Singers Who Rocked the World
Workshop Presenter: Kathryn Mahan
Social movements have a soundtrack, and for an emerging community of lesbians and feminists in the 1970s and 80s, that soundtrack was voiced by (pictured L-R) Cris Williamson, Tret Fure, Linda Tillery, Holly Near, plus Meg Christian, Bernice Johnson Reagon and Sweet Honey in the Rock. Albums, club appearances, concerts, political rallies and Women’s Music Festivals fueled a lesbian generation with folk songs, ballads, social justice anthems, comic numbers and even rock guitars.
Join us for a musical review of this transformative time in the women’s movement and LGBT history. We’ll listen to snippets from these amazing artists and lean into a little singing of our own. If this is your history, it’ll be an evening of comfort food. If you know nothing of this history, come listen and learn! In either case, you’re sure to leave with a song in your heart.
This program is funded in part by an ASC Cultural Vision Grant, a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County. Free admission; advance registration required at https://www.charlottelgbtqelders.org/programs-events
